Collagen and collagen hydrolysate: What’s the difference?

Collagen and collagen hydrolysate: What’s the difference?

Whey proteins are perhaps the world’s most used proteins in food supplements, shakes and smoothies, providing extra protein for recovery and growth. Although not as familiar, collagen hydrolysate makes for an equally excellent source of protein, but with the added advantage that its unique amino acid profile specifically supports skin, hair, and joint health.

Collagen in the body

About 25% to 35% of all protein in your body is collagen. It is the most abundant protein in connective tissue, skin and bones. And like all other compounds that make up your body, collagen, too, requires maintenance.

Gelatin and collagen hydrolysate

Gelatin is the collagen residue from preparations of whole pork, beef, chicken or fish. Collagen hydrolysate is gelatin processed further such that proteins are broken up into smaller pieces by means of enzymes. This makes that it is more easily absorbed and dispersed throughout the body. The big difference with gelatin powder is that collagen hydrolysate does not form a gel when mixed with a liquid: it conveniently remains liquid.

Gelatin and collagen hydrolysate: Key differences

The amino acid compositions of gelatin and collagen hydrolysate are the same: it is only the way they react with fluids that is different. Collagen hydrolysate does not form a gel or pudding, while gelatin does. The flavor of both is neutral, making them both, apart from healthy, versatile.

Collagen hydrolysate: Benefits

  1. Excellent source of protein
  2. Contains high concentrations of glycine, lysine and proline
  3. Neutral taste, derived from beef or sustainably caught cod
  4. Supports the body’s collagen network
  5. Best choice for joints, skin, hair and nails

Origin of Collagen

Because we choose to offer only the best and most healthy collagen, we have chosen not to use any bio-industrial products. Of all conceivable variants, there is nothing more natural than collagen derived from wild caught cod.
