Why we are MegaFood fans and why whole-food nutritional complexes are essential
MegaFood home-produces vitamins and supplement ingredients from genuine food sources. Over 226,796 kilos of fresh fruit and vegetables are processed annually. However, the process is not as simple as grinding, drying and processing tablets.
Fresh and whole food sources
On the labels of MegaFood products, under the heading of “FoodState Nutrients”, you will find various ingredients. These self-developed food components combine nutrients that work synergistically in the body. Just like real food.
A 80-year-old concept
The idea behind the development of these food complexes can be traced back 80 years to Nobel Prize laureate Albert Szent-Gyorgi. He discovered that pure vitamin C alone does not work as effectively as does vitamin C combined with other substances that naturally co-occur in vitamin C-rich foods.
Recent research
In a 2016 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, drinking blood orange juice was compared to drinking a vitamin C beverage that contained an identical amount of vitamin C. This showed that blood orange juice was a more effective C-booster due to the other nutrients it contained. The power was in the combination of all kinds of co-factors.
One-of-a-kind solution
At MegaFood people believe that vitamins without their corresponding food components lack the unique synergy and strength of full-fledged food sources. FoodState ingredients are the solution to this problem.
Nutrients are all unique and never have the same properties. For this reason MegaFood has developed three different processes to make ingredients. Each of these three processes starts with fresh and whole food sources such as oranges or broccoli. These are ground cold to open the cells. This is a process developed at the University of New Hampshire and results in:
Whole-food concentrates
The production process of WholeStateâ„¢ ingredients is the least complicated. After whole food sources have been ground, they are placed in a tank to be concentrated. A gentle drying process under low temperatures creates a powder of which nutritional value, colors and aromas have all been preserved.
Vitamin-fortified supplements
The production process of NutriStateâ„¢ vitamins is a lot more complex. After a grinding process, vitamins and enzymes are added to the food mix, resulting in a biotransformation of the vitamins!
They are integrated in the cell walls as also occurs in food. Afterwards, the mix is transferred once again to a process that further reduces the mix to a microscopic level. As a final step, gentle drying follows to create a powder.
Producing minerals
The production process of NutriStateâ„¢ minerals is the most complex process. Unlike vitamins, minerals are inorganic substances. In order to produce minerals that are easily recognized by the body and properly absorbed, MegaFood uses a living yeast species. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast is added to a mix of brown rice, and a particular mineral, in a bioreactor.
The yeast feeds on the rice and the mineral mixture. To promote growth of the yeast, oxygen is added and temperature is regulated. During this process, the particular mineral is absorbed into the wall of the yeast cells. To make the minerals easily absorbable, the yeast cell wall is broken up and carefully dried to a powder.
All three production processes result in concentrated nutrients in a food complex, just as it occurs in nature. When it comes to nutritional supplements, it does not get better than this.
Transparency is key to MegaFood
MegaFood strives to become the most transparent producer of natural food supplements. As one of few producers, MegaFood offers a unique look behind the scenes of supplements being made, and is the only brand that manages the entire production process from farm to tablet.
